Will Artificial Grass Hold Up to Monsoon Season?

We’ve been getting a lot of rain lately – enough to cancel a Diamondback’s game (read more). And while it’s nothing like the flash floods we saw back in 2017 (video), with the recent flash flood watch, it’s a good idea to be prepared as much as possible. Flooding in the southwest can be dangerous and unpredictable; the rocky soil here can’t always absorb moisture fast enough, so even a few inches can spell catastrophe.

As always, the safety of you and your family’s safety has to come first. But you also want to be prepared for the potential financial impact of flooding and heavy rain. So you want to know: will your artificial lawn hold up to local monsoons?

Here’s what you need to know about artificial grass and flooding:

  • Artificial Grass Drains Up To 40 Gallons an Hour Per Square Foot

That’s right. Artificial lawns are extremely porous. Not only is the infill made of a porous material, the material itself also has great drainage. So if you’re concerned about water pooling on top of an artificial lawn, worry not. It’s as good or better than a real lawn.

  • Artificial Grass is Not Harmed By Excessive Rain

This is one of the benefits of artificial lawns over natural grass. When the soil underneath becomes saturated and flooding does happen, natural grass can drown under too much rain. Ultimately this over-watering results in a sickly yellow grass, mold, and standing water where mosquitoes like to breed.

  • Artificial Grass Won’t Float Away or Be Torn Up by Rainwater

You’ve doubtless seen cars pulled along by floodwaters – the forces exerted by a sudden above-ground river are incredibly strong. Maybe you’re wondering whether your grass will hold up if this should happen around your home. Again, no need to worry. Our expert installations won’t be torn up by rampaging floodwaters. The worst that’s likely to happen is that the infill underneath may get dislodged and need to be adjusted to better match the natural shape of your yard.

So if you’re concerned about monsoon season ruining a potential investment, there’s no cause for alarm – artificial grass holds up to rain as good as (or better than) it holds up to heat.
